 Triptale
« Thread Started on Mar 10, 2007, 8:19pm »

The air in Triptale was breathtakingly crisp this afternoon. Even out from under the shade of the massive pine trees scattered around the town's otherwise cleared ground, it was a truly mountainous day. A few patches of snow yet remained from the last storm, tucked into shady corners around the rough log buildings of the woodsy community.

The smell of wood smoke was a constant reminder that despite the natural beauty surrounding and penetrating the town, it was still a town and still inhabited and civilized. Still, the peaceful quiet of the place was distracting. The men and women of Triptale were at their work--mining, foresting, trapping, hunting, sewing, weaving, and smithing.

A few folk were walking through the town's central square, which was surrounded by a number of the most prosperous shops in Triptale, as well as the city hall, which was more of an ornament than a functional part of the city. At the center of the square were the stocks, which had been empty for three weeks and counting. If the law had been more equally enforced, they would have been filled a lot more frequently, but nobody was going to try to get a Bear into the stocks when he was in a mood to start a brawl, not even the drunks who loitered around the big tavern at one end of the square.

The only sound that broke the mighty silence of the mountains here was the sound of a bright, insistent metallic clanging. It issued from a large, single-story building whose roof stretched down over the walls to form an awning that ran the perimeter of the structure. Attached to one wall was an open stable where horses might be tied up for short periods of time or stabled for a few days under cover. The walls of this adjoinment were lined with fine tools for working the leather and metal that went into saddles, reins, horseshoes, and other such useful items. Though they were exposed to any ruffian in town's view, they were rarely, if ever, stolen.

The clanging that issued from the building was clear and sharp coming from the wide, open doors. Heat also issued from the doors, and the suffocating smell of smoke as well as the bloody scent of red-hot iron. The silhouette of a massive furry body could be seen through the doors against the bright orange glow of the fire as the smith's hammer came down on some hapless project pinned to the anvil, again and again and again.

Presently, the clanging abruptly stopped, and a sharp, angry hiss issued from the cooling vat filled with water beside the smith's anvil. The smith emerged a moment later from his dark sanctum, stooping as he crossed the threshold both to allow his great head to clear the door and to claim a walking staff that lay just inside the door. The head of the staff was adorned with a string of beads that carried two small fangs.

The smith walked slowly and heavily out of his smithy, his staff and claws carving deep runnels in the ground as he traveled across the square to the stocks. He sat down slowly on the platform, arching his back and sucking in huge lungfuls of the crisp air, seeming to revel in how far he could stretch the seams of his plain linen shirt. He was a great brown Bear, muscular even for his race, just as a human smith is more muscular than a forest scout. His head swung this way and that, slowly and pendulously, and his eyes blinked lazily into the sun.

His current project would take a few hours to settle before he could work on it again. In the meantime, he had time to sit and contemplate. The sky overhead was far too bright and blue for anyone to be trapped inside a stuffy smithy all day.

OoC: I suppose it would have been better to join one that had already been joined by someone else, but this is the one I came up with a character for. :P

A young woman, no less than eighteen at a guess, walked into the square, basket in hand. Her name was Zel, and she was the daughter of the local doctor; or in any case, a woman with a wide knowledge of herbs who was known to be an apt midwife as well. Zel was an only child, being that her father had died when she was young, and her mother, who was named Thea, had never seen fit to remarry. Zel had not married yet herself, and still lived with her mother, learning herblore and helping with her mother's work. She was a happy girl, with typical flaxen hair and bright blue eyes, pretty in a way, with perhaps a slightly large chin and thick eyebrows. Still, she had round, happy cheeks and was always smiling in a dreamy type of way.

Her mother had a slight reputation as having gone a bit off in the head after Zel's father had died, and the reputation had passed on somewhat to Zel herself. "She's a nice enough girl, but never quite focused," was what the wives would say when they happened to mention her. "Never quite looks you in the eye. Doesn't shy away from work, though. A good girl." Zel was mostly unaware of this, but it wouldn't have bothered her if she'd known.

Now she approached the large Bear smith, smiling widely at him and up at the clear sky, pleased at how her day was going. "Hello, sir," she said. "Are you enjoying the sun as much as I? Does your work go well?"

O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

"I figure this is not the best way to meet other persons," the female stated to herself, moving from the tavern's smokey insides. "Nor would it be the way to find those who do not become drunk on a daily basis, I suppose."

It was the normal day for the young ship-builder's daughter, but what other life would the fifteen-year-old lead? Stepping gradually forward, with the horrible stench of smoke still reeking within her lungs, she looked upon the other towns-people. A sigh escaped her thin lips, approaching the blacksmith with a simple nod.

"The sun is an aching annoyance," she said, the 'annoyance' itself giving a shimmer to her awake blue-hued eyes, "but I come here not to say that." She glanced between the two a moment, before landing her eyes on the Bear. "I come here in a matter of purchase."

(Argh. Dumb post. Oh, hi everyone!)

OoC: Yay Lostie joined! ^_^

"Oh, I find the sun delightful," Zel commented brightly. "However, it does make me squint, so I suppose I see your point. Still it is such a clear day, I don't know that I could call anything an annoyance."

((Hey there, Lostie! ^_^))

"Purchase, hmmm?" The bear's voice was a deep rumble, fitting of his massive frame. "I cannot build you a sun parasol, I'm afraid." It might have been a joke, but his big dark eyes were worriedly sincere. "Perhaps you could ask for something else?"

The girl had to make herself not roll her eyes, ignoring the one beside her. She kept her eyes on the Bear, "I have not come for such. I come from my father, who is in need of a hammer."

"Ahhh." The bear nodded and got to his feet in one hefty motion. Now that he was no longer seated, he towered over the two girls. "Yes, a hammer I can supply." He reached down and reclaimed his walking stick. "Know you what sort of hammer is required? Hammers come in all shapes and sizes under the sun." He beamed, baring a few extremely white teeth.

"Sadly enough, my idiot of a father told me not what hammer. All he said was, 'it's for a ship, get it,' then urged me to leave." The woman shrugged, arms crossing.

"Worrisome." The bear began to pace, seemingly lost in thought. ((ahahahahahaaha)) "Hmmm, yes, worrisome. And troubling, that too. Mallets are used on ships; but no, she says to me 'hammer', and it's not the same unless you're ignorant and a shipbuilder's not ignorant. Ball peen? Certainly not, not for a ship, ball peen's for metal and ships are wood or they'd sink. Claw? Possible, possible. Rip? Tack? Hmmmm." He looked up and took a moment to find the girl again. "Young woman, this will simply not do," he said, sounding somewhat querelous.

((Ha. Ha. Ha.)) The woman sighed, rolling her eyes. "What will not do?" she questioned, her tone giving off her irascible nature. "My father needs this hammer, and I'll take my business elsewhere if you do not supply me with such. I do not have a clue of what hammer he meant, but I need it, and I need it now."
